On 12-27-04, I railfanned the River LINE and have these questions. (Sorry if some of my notes are a bit sketchy; I didn't get around to posting in a while.)
  1. Freight rail facility and WRTC(?) - 36 St. Who uses it and information. Also is there a CSX yard around here?
  2. What do the signs "RCZ END", "ETC", "BTC" (both vertical), "END IDS" (also vertical), "END AUTO BLOCK", "DIB" (vertical), "S" (diamond), "D" (circle), "C" (diamond), and "LIGHT" signify?
  3. Crew switch 36 St. - What are crew shifts on the River Line?
  4. Tankers and trackage in a factory around MP 16. - Any insight?
  5. At one of the grade crossings, I spotted a shrink-wrapped bus advertising the River Line. That was interesting.
  6. What kind of motor do River Line equipment use? Also what is its specifications? (HP, height, weight, fuel capacity, etc.)
  7. At MP 6, I noticed a spur track. What is it?
  8. Also additional freight at MP 10 and NS freight at MP 25. Does this tie in with my other freight questions?
  9. C5 #6549 at MP 21. Another spur track with equipment. Did I copy this correctly and please explain.
  10. Spur track at Cass St. - Please develop.
  11. "Yard limit" spur track(s) and supposedly multi-catenary wiring at Trenton. - Develop as well.
  12. Burlington Yard, Conrail, Florence Park. Any notable info?
  13. I spotted a sign that read "Attention Remote Control Loco....." What does this mean?
  14. Spur track at Florence. Please explain.
  15. Green and rusty RR cranes at Roebling. Please explain.
  16. Spur track at Beverly Station. Please explain.
  17. 2 connected sets - HATCH- wiring at Pennsauken and Cinnaminson. Also some signs that read "RR Exempt". Any explanations available?
I apologize for the lengthiness, but I hope the answers can give me more insight into the interesting River Line. What ROW did this line use to be?

1. The nearest CSX yard is in Philly. The freight yard south of 36th Street is Conrail Shared Assets' Pavonia Yard, formerly Conrail and PRR.

6. The engine is a Mercedes V-12 marine diesel. I have the specs somewhere, but am too disorganized to put my finger on them.

13. Conrail does some remote control switching at Pavonia.

15. The crane and GE critters are part of the remains of Roebling Steel (of Brooklyn Bridge fame).

1. Im guessing by your notes your asking about Pavonia Yard. Located adjcent to the River LINE it serves as the base of operations for Conrail Shared Assets South Jersey.

2. Ok, Im gonna guess at a couple, and a couple I just dont know but here goes:
-"RCZ END" My guess would be Remote Control Zone End. It would indicate the end of the Remote Control Zone at Pavonia.
-"ETC" End Train Control. Im not certain, but it would probably be end train control, related to the train stop system used by the LRVs.
-"BTC" Begin Train Control. The oppisite of "ETC".
-"End IDS" Got me.
-"End Auto Block" This indicates the end of automatic block signal territory. The indication of the last signal governs only to this sign. Beyond, the track is operated by some form of non-signaled control (Form D, running track, etc).
-"DIB" Delay In Block sign. A visual reminder to Push Pull trains (and LRVs) that rule 504(b) applies in this block. It reminds engineers (or LRV operators) that if they have stoped at the station where the sign is located they must proceed not exceeding 40 mph prepared to stop at the next signal, which is at an interlocking.
-"S" (diamond) Speed Limit Sign. It marks the begining of a temporary speed restriction. It would be preceeded by an approach temporary speed limit sign indicating the temporary speed restriction (black numerals on a yellow background).
-"D" (circle) Distant Signal Marker. A visual reminder to push pull trains (and LRVs) that rule 504(b) applies in this block. If a push pull train stops for a station stop or reduces speed below 10mph they must proceed not exceeding 40mph prepared to stop at the next signal, which will be at an interlocking.
-"C" (diamond) Got Me.
-"Light" No idea.

That was the South Trenton Branch. Ran closely between houses to the American Bridge Plant on the Delaware River. Near where the Trenton Thunder Stadium and the Katmandu restaurant is now. Large girders were built there. I saw trains run down the branch in the 70's. Ambridge had their own small side rod deisel switcher for in plant use. There is still some track near the closed housing projects. There had been a frog where the line crossed a trolley line on Centre St. Trolleys were gone by 1934. You can still follow the line most of the way.

Is DIB as a result of the Silver Spring MARC crash, or was that sign around prior?
