Why does bart uses 100 volt dcrather than 750 and 600 volt. Also is the bart third rail of the top, middle or bottom type with wide or narrow head?

R10: BART uses 1000 volt DC third rail-top contact thick and wide aluminum. BARTs track gauge is wider also 5'6" VS. standard 4'8 1/2 in. MACTRAXX

Hi,

That sounds about right. I thought the 100 VDC was way too low. Didn't know about the wide gauge. In Los Angeles, Metrorail uses 750 VDC on either a third rail, or catenary. All standard gauge.

Like Mactraxx says - 1000 volts dc, top-running third rail.

Some of the third rail is all aluminum, while most is a composite aluminum (for conductivity) with steel (for rigidity). There's always a few scraps of third rail lying around. If you look from the platforms, you might see some old, worn third rail that hasn't been picked up yet.

There are a couple of spots that are a long way from a substation, which was the justification for the higher voltage. One (Golden Gate Bridge lower deck) was never built, but the transbay tube is the other.

Transbay Tube Third Railhas some details.

LA – third rail, no cat (at least not in the subway).

Okay, let's get specific:

The Red Line uses a third rail, and is a true subway, short, but showing growing pains. 750 VDC on the third rail.

The Blue Line, Green Line, Gold Line are all LRV's and use a Catenary. 750 VDC on the Catenary.

The Gold Line is in the process of being extended.
