When the B&M had the contract to run commuter trains out of South Station in the late 70's/early 80's did they ever run B&M freights on those "southern lines" or was it strictly Conrail etc that had domain over that territory?

B&M was strictly commuter trains. Conrail had all the freight business
except for lines parcelled out to shortlines like Bay Colony.

Since the B&M ran the commuter service, they did operate work trains
on the MBTA owned lines - most notablely a welded rail train with back to back FP10's...

The day the B & M took over, I believe a B & M GP-9 headed up the first train in from Needham to show a B & M prescence. For a time a B & M switch engine also worked South Station-Southampton St. shuffling equipment around.
