B&H caboose

Anyone have the lineage of the ex-Erie B&H wooden caboose that is in Hammondsport? It's the one with the side door. Was that door added by the B&H or Erie? Thanks.

Where is the said caboose sitting, in Hammondsport?

It used to sit next to the B&H depot in Hammondsport (and shown on many postcards) but it now is at the Curtiss Air Museum just south of the village. It's viewable right from Rt. 54 as you pass the museum.

The caboose is ex-Erie #04651. She was a standard end-door type, but the B&H rebuilt the caboose into a side-door unit. The side door was for express and lcl service. The caboose served in that capacity until 1971.

A recent "History Detectives" episode on PBS featured a scene at the Curtiss Museum that included the B&H caboose in the background.

The November 2007 issue of Scale Rails from the NMRA has an article on this caboose on page 30. It also contains drawings. The B&H definitely added the side doors.
