Hope that someone can answer these questions: Is/has rail service been extended to the new Costco distribution center in Monrovia and what is the reasoning behind the installation of flashers for the Old National Pike (Rte. 144) crossing just west of Mt. Airy?

The first question is fairly obvious but a little explanation may be needed for the second one. The crossing being reworked is a spur off the main that at one time was part of the original main before the Watersville tunnel. More recently it served a cold storage facility and a fertilizer operation. The cold storage business has disappeared and the structure torn down. The fertilizer operation might receive one tanker a month now.

Prior to the signals installation the crossing has always been signed and flagged for the relatively infrequent rail traffic. I'm wondering if something else is going on to warrant the expense of a complete flasher installation for this little used spur or is there a requirement for flashers based upon the road traffic across it regardless of the amount of rail traffic. Seems like a large expense for such little use.

Thanks.

This is a complete guess, but I do know that some of the Stimulus bill funds where used to replace/upgrade crossings. Someone mentioned that a similar event happened in MA; brand new crossing guards for a rarely used crossing.
