A Palm Beach Transportation Planning Agency study calls for a light-rail transit line to be built along a 13-mile corridor of Okeechobee Boulevard and State Road 7 to transport people from the Mall at Wellington Green to downtown West Palm Beach.
The next stop will be with the Florida Department of Transportation. It has budgeted $2 million to conduct its own feasibility study of the TPA findings to determine if the $856 million project should move forward. Most of the funding would come from federal and state sources, but the county would need to pay for maintenance and administrative costs. The cost is an estimate and could change based on inflationary factors.
It could take seven to 10 years before the project would be built. Standing in the way is the need to find a local funding source. Broward and Miami-Dade counties have adopted a sales-tax surcharge to pay for major transit expansion projects.

Next stop, Willoughby
