A picture caption at the Railroad Picture Archives site says that E-7A 4003 and 4020 were wrecked badly at Conneaut, Ohio, in 1953, and rebuilt by EMD. Externally, the rebuilt units look like E-8.
Does anybody know more details about the rebuilding? In particular, did they incorporate major internal components (in particular, engines and generators) from the wrecked units, and were they rated at 2000 or 2250 hp)?

The book I have says they kept their main generators and some other equipment and rated 2250hp. I'm guessing they retained their prime movers
and the rear one was turned to face each other as other E8s.

The wreck at Conneaut OH in 1953 still holds the record for a railroad wreck that involved FOUR trains;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1953_New_ ... d_accident

On a four track mainline an Eastbound freight train lost some pipe from an improperly secured load on a gondola car (the steel strapping that was supposed to hold the pipes in place was never "crimped" at the ends).

The Caboose of a Westbound freight spotted sparks from the middle of the eastbound freight and signaled them to stop. The eastbound freight stopped and inspected their train.

In the meantime some of the pipes (35 foot long and 18 inch diameter) that fell off the freight train "jammed" between cars of the freight train and the rails of the Passenger Main. This displaced the Passenger Main by a foot and a half JUST as a westbound passenger train was rounding the curve. This passenger train (at 70 plus mph) derailed and slammed into the westbound freight train.

The derailed wreckage blocked all four mainline tracks (2 freight and 2 passenger) JUST AS AN EASTBOUND PASSENGER train arrived.....

Talk about a "bad day at work".....

All traced back to a car full of pipe that was not properly secured before it was released for movement....
