Located on the Toledo Branch of the Detroit Division, about 3 miles south of Wyandotte. Double-track line, ABS & ATS rules. FN Interlocking controls xgs of the D&TSL (2 tracks) and DT&I (1 track).

Train #309 "Ohio Special" DET / CIN with Eng. 5391 and 14 cars (3 headend, 3 coaches, 8 sleepers) approached at about 55mph on "CLEAR" signals. Rail between the D&TSL diamonds broke under the head end of the train; 5391 and head car made it across; head 8 cars derailed; 3 fatalities and 17 injuries.

Would PTC have prevented this type of accident?

This wreck was extensively covered in the Central headlight of the New York Central system Historical Society.

Diamonds always took a beating and are maintenance hogs, as we all know. Trains hitting them at speed sound like destruction taking place.

Yes, if PTC had the ability to look into the future.
