Train #733 (Eng. 2445 / 10 coaches / 1 club car - Jersey City to Bay Head Jct.) derailed and overturned on a shoofly at a highway underpass construction site.
83 passengers and 1 employee died, and 345 passengers and 5 employees were injured.
Site was protected only by a New York Divisional General Order; no temporary fixed signals (temporary speed restriction signs).
ICC recommended that the PRR install a train control system.
