Is there any good sites out there on railroads of the 19th century, preferably with lots of pictures? I've always been interested in railroads of the period but never found much about them and quickly lost interest. I've had some luck with the library of congress website, but besides that I havent found much. :(

I do 19th century railroading, everyday!!! Our slogan (I am trying to get the carrier to adopt it, without much luck, though) is: DELIVERING YESTERDAYS' TRAIN, TOMORROW....... I am railroading in the land of the lost. Try a search using www.dogpile.com Type in a sentance, or words, like "old time railroads, 19th century trains, etc. Something will pop up. Good luck

I have an issue of Model Railroader from '94 that talks about Harper's Ferry (or was it Boon's Landing?), IA in 1906 as well as a MR Great Model Railroads that has a blurb on an 1800's layout. Let me see if I can dig 'em up.

'Bout the best I can do for ya right now (I'm a historian, but my archives are kinda spartian at the moment).

You might also look for anything you can find on the Westinghouse Air Brake, or the automatic coupler.

Just about any information on 19th century railroading is coming from the Civil War Civil War Railroads by Geo. B. Abdill is a great pictoprial source. Also http://www.csa-railroads.com is a good source. This website http://loggingmallets.railfan.net/trainsim/4_4_0.htmhas several MSTS pictures of early locomotives. As soon as I think of more I will post them.
