Service Disruption - Montauk Branch

Post by Gilbert B Norman » Sat May 25, 2019 9:57 am

Sideswipe at Speonk:

https://www.nypost.com/2019/05/25/lirr- ... derailment" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Fair Use:
A Montauk-bound train with 32 passengers on board side-swiped another train near Speonk after leaving Penn Station at 1:09 a.m. The other train, which was empty and traveling on a side track, derailed.

No one was injured, according to the agency.

Tweet from LIRR:
Service is suspended on the Montauk Branch following a slow-speed impact east of Speonk between a work locomotive and an eastbound revenue train as a passing move was being attempted in single-track territory resulting in the derailment of a locomotive.
”passing move was being attempted in single-track territory”

Ah, railroad humor!
As you leave the train, please step over the gap between the train and the platform

This isn’t a good way to start any weekend, especially Memorial Day. I’m glad that nobody was hurt. Unfortunately so many people have been inconvenienced. The Ronkonkoma/Greenport Line is a very limited alternative to the Montauk Line east of Patchogue and the scoots between KO and Greenport are probably packed to begin with. On the other hand, unlike the Montauk Line east of Patchogue on weekends, you can travel as far as Greenport on the train departing NYC during the middle of the day. Bear in mind that being that the forks split east of Riverhead, once you are on the North Fork, it can take a while to drive from a station on the Greenport Branch to the South Shore.

Everyone:

I agree - not a good start to the Memorial Day holiday weekend - Saturday morning getaway trains
can be quite busy to recreation and resort venues. Luckily this happened on the overnight.

Buff: The Ronkonkoma-Greenport Scoots are not nearly as busy as the Montauk Branch portion east
of Speonk is - the only trains that would be near capacity would be the Friday PM Peak runs. There
may be added riders on one of the Saturday AM runs eastbound.

Riverhead is where the North and South Forks divide - it is exactly 21 miles (73.3 to 94.3 miles)
between Riverhead and Greenport. Depending on how far east one goes on the North Fork there
are at least two practical routes: 1-going west to County Route 105 which crosses the mouth of
the Peconic River and bypasses central Riverhead -or- 2-NYS 114 to Shelter Island at Greenport
crossing SI using both the North and South Ferries to the South Fork near Sag Harbor. The North
Ferry is right next to the Greenport LIRR Station.

I thought that the LIRR Wreck Crew was "internationally acclaimed"? From what I've read on here, it seemed like they were going to get a reality TV show and have the Foreman run for public office. You sure they weren't dispatched to help MNCR?
