Bob's cool photos from 1978:

was the catalist for me to do some searching for LV 256..
and I found her! :)

until now, she was only listed as a potential survivor, last seen in 1998.
SW8m 256 - First Miss Steel, Hollsopple, PA ex CR 8670 - was there in 1998
info from the book "Comprehensive Guide to Industrial Locomotives" 1998 edition
I found her working for the Maryland & Delaware Railroad, as their 802.

Leased to a "SPI corp" or "SPI Polyols" in either New Castle or Wilmington, DE (reports vary)

trying to locate a recent photo..no luck yet.

I'm here in Delaware now, Scot. Get me some info, on where you think it's at, and I'll go look, and see if I can find her, and snag some pics. :-D

sounds good GA!
The info I found on-line says "Leased to a "SPI corp" or "SPI Polyols" in either New Castle or Wilmington, DE"

some googling brought up that "SPI Polyols" is now "Corn Products US", which has a division:

Corn Products Specialty Ingredients
321 Cherry Lane
New Castle, DE 19720
877-567-8501

then putting 321 Cherry Lane New Castle, DE 19720 into "windows live local" brings up a fairly large industrial facility with rails all about and into it..thats probably the place!

lets see if this works:
http://maps.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.qmfs ... &encType=1

click on "birds eye view" then click on the "x" to get rid of the junk on the left side of the page..
that should show you the plant..
then you can click on "road" and zoom out to get a map of the area..

New Castle is near Wilmington..north end of the state.

I can see the pup, on the map you provided. it's off of Cherry Street, just inside the fence. It's even painted red! I'll swing by, soon, as it's only a mile from the Wilmington Training Center, and I have to pass this area when I travel there. I tried several times to stick a pushpin in the loco, and save it, but the program isn't working for me....... :( Follow the NS main south, and Cherry Street will be the next large crossing, on your map. Directly east of the crossing, about 400-500 feet, sits the bright red pup. You can't miss it. Regards, Dave

One last try: http://maps.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.qmfg ... &encType=1 (pushpin numer 1) FWIW, I used the "rotate" directional feature, and viewed the loco from all four sides. It's a pup, and you will clearly see the DB hood section, even though it's blanked. Looking at the area just off the main, at Cherry street, you will see mountains of sand, all over the rail. This indicates a regular parking spot for the loco, easily accesible from public property. Nice find, Scot!

Here's a Conrail Quality Geep, pulling a string of tanks, the same day as the pup picture: http://maps.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.qmfj ... &encType=1

Wow!
still in Red! :)

although sadly not original LV red..
because this unit did recieve Conrail blue:

it's probably painted in the Maryland & Delaware scheme..which happens to be a nice deep red:

this is a very elusive unit!
No one seems to have a recent photo on-line..

Lehighton:

My notes relate that ConRail unit 8673 (ex-LVRR 259) was retired 11 April 1991. The unit was sold to Intermodal Technologies and re# 2 as of E/M 1993.

FWIW, I went to the Harley Shop at the foot of the DelMemBr, and afterwards, I made a side trip to the industrial park. The pup is there, but it wasn't close enough to shoot with an Olymnpus Stylus 1200, that I picked up, for the "mission". The folks at the gate wouldn't let me see it up close, or photograph it, even after pleading with them, to visit a long lost friend....... :( It will take some time, to stake it out, and wait for it to come outside the gate. (possibly getting hired, long enough to shoot some pics, before quitting, also comes to mind) Regards

BTW, I also tried to track down the LV Alco at Wilmington Steel. I remember seeing it many years ago, from trackside, but I never could figure out how to get back there, on foot, to see if it was still there.

Reviving this old thread... With No. 802 having gone to Newport News, has anyone seen the new locomotive at the Corn Products Specialty Ingredients plant in New Castle? An end-cab switcher is visible in Google Earth photos but I have no data on it or pictures.
