No, not since CSX cut over to the GTW in Munster. I want to say the last trains were to the Hammond times before they relocated in the 80's.

Restoration of NKP 624 - Hammond, IN
- Discussion related to the Norfolk & Western, up to 1982. Also includes discussion of the Virginian Railway (1959); Wabash; Nickel Plate; Pittsburgh & West Virginia Railway; Akron, Canton & Youngstown Raiload (all 1964); and the Illinois Terminal (1981).
As per an Email from Mr. Heggi. "HAMMOND, IN - The Northwest Indiana Rail Preservation Society (NWIRPS) has scheduled their first public meeting for June 07, 2007 at 06:30pm. Location and agenda to be announced soon. Membership applications will be available. The first work session for the NKP 624 will be the following Saturday and Sunday, June 09 & 10 from 08:00am until 4:00pm. Volunteers will be required to sign a hold harmless agreement. Safety equipment for some tasks is required, so if you have steel toe shoes, safety glasses, gloves and ear plugs please have them available for your protection. Rakes, brooms, shovels, and other hand tools can be brought for general yard and cleanup use if you have them."
Yesterday everyone met at the NKP site at about 8am. At the meeting we spoke about whats needed to be done, so we had a general idea of tasks. Kevin took charge of washing the 624 down used a fire hose. A couple member started mowing the lawn and weed trimming while a couple others and myself starting to gut out the CSS 1062 caboose. Later on that day thru a group effort we got the reefer door back on URTX 37076. The last of us packed up at 730pm. Over all a good day.
Today's plan is to finish gutting the CSS Caboose and sweeping out the Reefer car, venting it out and falling a few trees in the display area.

Well It's about time we updated this a little bit.
In 2007 we had a few work sessions at the NKP 624 display site. Trees were cut back and/or removed. Also, we washed alot of the dirt and rust off of the 624. Work has started on restoration of its Mars Light and Headlight. We also cleaned out what was left of the interior in the South Shore caboose (Was fire damaged years ago)
A couple of our members teamed up later in the summer to rescue a long-lost wooden Monon caboose. This is in storage until we get a more permanent home.
Also, this month our group met up with the IHB in order to open up Hohman Ave tower for us. Many photos and measurements were taken. A basic damage control inventory also as most of the windows were broken out and covered with plywood. It seems we have a bit of a bird issue now. Other then that the tower was found to be very solid and dry.

Spring Clean Up 4/28/2008
This years first clean up day at the 624 display site went very well.
Vice President Joe Novosel brought the hi-rail boom truck out to help with the removal of the last portion of the original fence from the display site. Visiting future member Mark Stanek also drove up from Lacrosse, IN with his hi-rail truck. Using the boom truck to yank the old fence posts out of the ground, Mark and a few other members on site went to the task of removing the concrete from the base of the posts so they can be scrapped for museum funds. Mark Rubacka also helped with weed patrol around the fence line and display cars.
Plans are being discussed for the South Shore caboose's new paint job which can possibly taken place this year. Also discussed were dates for work days on the Monon caboose as well as the PRR Signal.
A meeting was scheduled with the EJ&E railroad in conjunction with the proposed donation of the abandoned branch line thru Hammond towards Gary, IN as a permanent home. ( If this goes thru then we will finally have a place to move our interlocking tower to)

West side doors were sealed shut to prevent further vandalism. East side doors on the car were opened and a padlock applied. The car was also opened, the floor folded up and swept out.
NKP 624:
Numberboards, Mars light, and Headlight were all removed for sandblasting and repainting. Smokebox door was opened and leaks marked, some soot removed. The sand dome was also opened and all damp sand removed. The firebox was also inspected and reported to be "Very Dry"

Yes, the truck is owned by a company owned by a member of the Monon RR Historical Society. Also, the current owner of the Monon logo is also a member.
