The Alco switcher you lensed in Scranton is the former Alco plant switcher. The DL was leasing it at the time. It has since moved on to an excursion line in NY State whose name escapes me at the moment.

Tioga Central 14 is orig. a Buffalo Creek engine that went to South Buffalo then OMID than G.E. railcar then Owego now hangs out in Tioga PA or something like that others on here might now a little more.Tryed my best from memory.

Tioga Central was BCK 46, CR 9662, ONCT 46, ONCT 14. Leased to North American Car at Sayre, then went to Tioga Central and whatever various tourist entities since.

The Alco plant switcher worked for:

Strasburg 1991 (never used)

Adirondack Centennial Railroad Thendara NY 1992-93

Delaware Lackawanna Scranton PA 1994-99

Upper Hudson River railroad North Creek NY 1999-present.

Hope this helps. :-)

For some reason, the topics are being locked down here. Each individual Alco, needs it's own thread. By lumping them together, or locking valid, working threads, the communication pipeline is abruptly shut-off. I don't feel you should have to wade through pages and pages, wondering if anyone has added more locos, to the search. ALL railroads are connected, so why not a single thread, instead of this whole board? Just a thought. I would have responded about a loco in a locked topic, that hasn't been answered, and now can't. If I find an Alco, sitting inside a gated facility, unknown to the public, and not visible from public lands, I now can't start a thread, to chase down info on it. Interesting......... :(
I do see little locos, all over the country, unseen, by the public. Wondering what anyone else thinks, about this?

You answered your own question....You only need 1 thread to cover similar subject matter which is: Mystery Alcos.

If you feel that this thread is not enough to answer your question, then start a SPECFIC thread with a title such as : Mystery Alcos on the XYZ Railroad. Then that thread will cover JUST Alcos of that railroad...nothing else.I see no reason to repeat the same thread over and over.Thats why I locked two out of the three.

Hi.
Thanks to the members of this fourum for the Alco switcher info that has been provided so far. It is greatly appreciated.

I am sorry if I caused a mess by asking about the histories of nine switchers in one query.

Thank you again,
Arnie Morscher

I think it's great, to have a venue, to find the heritage of mystery units. I have dozens of photos, of little industrial engines, and ex-class one switchers, behind walls, gates and buildings, that I would like info on, one day. There is nothing wrong with looking for, or providing those answers. You would be suprised, the amount of engines, abandoned in mills, and complex terminals, just shoved into an unused spur, or lifted off the rails, and set off into the weeds. One place I switched in recently, has 3 locos, sitting in an overgrown field, in the dirt, far away from the nearest rails, or roads..........

Keep in mind that alotta 539-powered switchers have the batch number (e.g., S1872) stamped somewhere on the top of the coupler assembly by or on the frame. This would be a big hint as to a unit's origin. Blunt trucks on the rear have the number for sure stamped on it, but this would be of no help if the unit went through a truck swap. Everybody, always remember to check the aformentioned things on a zombie!!!

I was looking back through my slides and came across a couple of the units in question. From what I remember and what my slides show, Peavy Grain 9105 used to be Amber Milling 7096, ex-CP 7096. I think this is one of the 3 Alco switchers CP bought in the late 40's for use in the US in Vermont. I shot this unit down at Silcott small loco shop in Economy, Pa a couple times in the 90's. First as a CP Rail unit then as the Amber Milling unit. From what I can tell, Silcott also did the repowering as well at Economy.

The blue SCR 100 also used to be used at Livingston Steel in Economy, in the late 80's. I beleive it was an ex-Amrco Steel S-1.

Hope this helps.

The Peavy Grain unit is an S-4; I thought CP 7096 is an S-2.
