Amtrak Fan-- Not sure about the C-636. The M-636 certainly had "issues". I believe that CN derated theirs to 3200 (hp) hp, and I have seen an MLW employee quoted as saying that the company couldn't afford (or maybe couldn't survive) another locomotive as bad.
Still, in heavy-haul ore service (on "captive" lines with MUCH higher maintenace standards than typical class I railroads) both models had long (up to around 30 years) and productive lives!
