Some additional showings are being discussed for 2005, those which are open to "walk-ins" will be mentioned when possible.

Two upcoming showings of the INSIDE EMD program on the old La Grange Plant One, will be at the NYCHS Annual Meeting (members only event, requires registration) and at the May meeting of the 470 Railroad Club in Portland, Maine (open to walk in guests).

My thanks to all the folks at the 470 Railroad Club for a very nice time in Maine.

The showing of INSIDE EMD in the New Bedford / Fall River Massachusetts area will be at the Dartmouth Bible Church on Morton Ave. in North Dartmouth, Mass. starting at 12 Noon on Saturday, May 21, 2005. The program is quite long, it usually runs more than 2 hours, and we add a 15 minute break in the middle. The church is located one block northwest of the main entrance to the U. Mass Dartmouth campus. They have a nice meeting room with adequate seating for walk-in guests. Directions and a map are available on the church website (look for "directions" in the menu on the left side of their web page):

John, thanks for your comment. If any showings of the program are scheduled in the Chicago area we will try to make sure they get posted on this string.

Many of the showings of INSIDE EMD this year were at events that were "members-only", but the program will be shown several times this fall for groups that are willing to accept walk-in guests. One showing will be at the Norfolk RR Club which meets at the Library in Norwood, Mass. on October 26th 2005 at 7 PM and another will be at the NMRA Hub Division's Railfun meeting at 8 PM on Friday evening the 21st of October 2005 at the Cambridge School of Weston, just off Route 128 in Waltham, Mass.

Please note that the starting time for the showing at the Norwood Mass. Library on October 26th has been moved up to 6PM. This was necessary to allow adequate time to clean up and rearrange the meeting room prior to the library closing. That is now 6PM starting time.

The showing at Norwood on the 26th is presently the last showing in 2005 that is open to walk-in visitors. There is one additional showing under discussion that may also take walk-ins, but plans are not finalized yet.

Inside EMD will be presented at the Palmer (MA) Public Library on Thursday, November 17th at 6:00PM. This also gives you the opportunity before or after the program to travel up Main Street and visit the Steaming Tender Restaurant in the Palmer Union Station.

Just a quick reminder. Tomorrow night, November 17th, will probably be your last chance to view Inside EMD. Mr. Cook has indicated this program will go in to temporary retirement while he works on some of his newer programs.

The Republican
Locomotive talk set at library
Wednesday, November 16, 2005

PALMER - Tomorrow at 6 p.m., Preston Cook will give a color slide show, "Inside EMD," at the Palmer Public Library, 1085 Park St.

The Electro-Motive Division of General Motors in Illinois, also known as EMD, at one time was the largest locomotive manufacturing facility in the world. It was demolished several years ago.

Included in this presentation is a brief history of EMD, a tour of the facility as it appeared in its peak production years of the 1970s, and the manufacturing of colorful and unusual EMD products. It is a trip back to a place and time that now survives only in photos and in the memories of those who worked there.

Cook is a mechanical engineering graduate of the University of Massachusetts. He worked for 16 years as a field service engineer, training center instructor and district engineer for EMD. Cook manages 37 rebuilt F40PH-2C locomotives operating on the MBTA in Boston.

He is the author of several railroad books, including "Erie Lackawanna Memories" and "The Railroad Night Scene." He has also written numerous magazine articles on railroad, marine, naval, military and travel.

This program is open to the public and refreshments will be served. For information, call the library at (413) 283-3330. Submitted by the Palmer Public Library.
