Metro may not return to smoother, more efficient automatic train operation for five to seven years, since the current system may be scrapped before it ever gets reactivated.

The current automatic operations system is the same as when Metro opened more than 40 years ago, and could need additional fixes to get back up and running, given that it hasn’t been active for a decade.

Metro is continuing to look into a more modern signal and train control system that would be entirely different from the current system, which monitors the position of trains based on set segments of track.

Automatic operations would not have prevented the collision. The operator proceeded forward with zero speed commands without being granted permission to do so.

Dumping the coded track circuit train control system for a communication based train control system would not improve automatic operation or allow a greater number of train per hour primarily because WMATA does not enough rolling stock.

Given the numerous accidents under the whole system, I would not be surprised if "replace" becomes cheaper than "repair".

I would believe the opposite as there is more ground hardware and wiring per mile in a communication based train control system then there is in a coded track circuit train control system.

This makes no sense. Because a human made an error we're scrapping a plan to implement a system that would've prevented the accident from ever happening in the first place?

You need to change the title of this post. After reading the article it's completely misleading. The delay of automatic operations has absolutely nothing to do with the October crash.
