The Mullens Paper tester was a way to test the bursting strength of paper. The gauge would read the pressure being applied to the paper and when the paper burst, you had your reading. Simply push the restart button on the gauge and you could start all over again. These testers (and much more modern ones) are still used today and the Perkins Company has been making them since 1887.
