Train #531 with 1 unit and 8 coaches stopped in accordance with signal indications and flagman of the train ahead. Engineer whistled out his flag who had dropped a lit fusee as the train slowed to a stop. Flagman then got off and headed eastward.
Train #813 with 2 units and 10 cars had stopped at the prior signal, but was proceeding at a rate faster than permitted. Came around a curve and saw the train ahead; engineer made an emergency application and reduced speed to an estimated 5 mph. Cars damaged and derailed indicate a somewhat greater speed at impact.
