At about 7AM, Train Q390 (3 units & 78 cars) enroute from BUF to Selkirk at about 45 mph derailed 29 cars including loads of LPG, toluene, and ferric chloride due to a broken rail.

Tank cars were breached and product ignited causing a 1/2-mile evacuation and closing 2 schools. Fortunately, no fatalities or reported injuries.

Damage costs were about $6,750,000.

That's his thing, posting train wrecks of the past; some going back to at least the Harding administration!

Gives an interesting perspective on how the same mistakes keep being made over and over through the years.

Well, a few things change. No more cabooses (cabeese??), tenders, firemen, Pullman cars, or reports of having a "fouled" firebox. Do 'flimsys' still exist at all?

Those things were normal operational features of the time. I'm thinking about various violations of standard operating practices that keep happening.
No more flimsies today, since afaik Form D's and suchlike are on standard paper, there being no longer a need to make multiple copies by pressing hard through a wad of thin paper forms on a metal clipboard. (Hard to believe that modern developments have actually led to a reduction in paperwork...)
