Palm Springs is around 4 hours from Vegas, but pretty close to Cajon and Los Angeles which may have cheaper flights.
If you look at PTTs in the late 50s'/60s (to the end of passenger service), UP used the "Overland Route" as its nickname!

Thanks. UP has apparently decided that all engines in predecessor paint are to be repainted as a final achievement of the current VP of Mechanical before he retires.
