The commuter railroad's long-term fleet plan calls for adding up to 40 new Tier 4 locomotives at a cost of $280 million.
$7m apiece, steep compared to a standard Tier 3 GEVO ca. 2014 or a cost-adjusted $211,600 ($2.1m today) of a 1949 Alco PA. Guessing the price will drop though - Metrolink had to bear the brunt of the development costs.

Passenger locos are always a lot more expensive than freight locos, and these days the upfront cost typically includes a longterm maintenance contract, training, and other add-ons. If I recall correctly, MBTA paid a similar price for their GEVO-powered HSP46s, which use a much higher percentage of off-the-shelf freight loco components than these new EMD/CAT beasts.

Reopening an old thread:

How are the F125s faring in actual service? We've been talking up the Siemens SC-44 so much in the Amtrak forum that for a while I forgot about EMD's entry.

Also, what are your thoughts on stuffing a 12-1010 into an EMD passenger locomotive, now that the J block is finally ready?

Those beasts need a lot of cooling capacity in order to function properly at Tier 4 and that might pose some issues in a 4-axle passenger locomotive where space/height/width are limited and weight has to be kept in check. For example, GE and MPI were able to do it with the Tier 3 GEVO-12 but I'm not sure if they could do it with the Tier 4 version which has more (and bigger) contraptions added to it. I suspect EMD would have the same issues and that's probably why they haven't done it.
