With so many of North America's commuter rail agencies purchasing new diesel locomotives in recent times, there is now a large quantity of used passenger locomotives on the market. Aside from when Amtrak started clearing out their F40s, I can't recall another time in the past 10 years when there were so many used passenger locomotives on the market all at the same time.

Here are some examples of what's currently available:

7 GP40FH-2s ($250K each): http://railswap.org/osc/classifieds/ind ... em&id=1623" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

3 F59PHs ($455K each): http://www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com/det ... -SALELEASE" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

1 F40PH with "some freeze damage" ($170K): http://www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com/det ... SE-REDUCED" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Note: I'm not connected with any of these companies; I'm just posting this because I thought the topic might be interesting to fellow RAILROAD.NET members, and because I thought it was fairly remarkable to find 26 passenger locomotives on the market all at the same time.

I find it interesting that most of these were most recently used by AMT and a number belonged to NJT. I guess this is the fallout from these agencies adding some new Bombardier ALP45-DP units to their fleets.

and not a mile of track in Florida is rated over 79 mph for passenger, and won't be for next 20 years so who cares.

Not now, but AAF plans include 110 mph operations between Palm Beach to Coco Beach, and 125 mph between Coco Beach and Orlando by 2015. Why would they buy used locomotives that can't achieve those speeds?

Are there any U.S. or Canadian commuter operations, current or proposed, that WOULD potentially be interested in the above-listed units?

Southeast Michigan might - if it ever becomes a reality. Oklahoma's Eastern Flyer using Iowa Pacific coaches might, assuming it gets approval to start up services. But not any existing commuter rail agencies seem interested.

Thank you. I suspected as much. A frequent poster in the MBTA forum has suggested on several occasions that new/startup commuter operators will be lining up at the MBTA's door to purchase the F40s when MBTA retires them, but considering the glut of F40s and 40-series derivative passenger locomotives already available (and some of them have been available for quite a while), I'm having a hard time figuring out where that demand is going to come from.

If they want to start running in late 2015 something's going to pull those trains and these units have been recently rehabbed so they're not a bad place to start. The F125 -though already in the production/pre-production stage- wouldn't be ready in time by then even if AAF piggybacked onto Metrolink's 10-20 unit order. And from an economic standpoint it's more prudent for AAF/FEC to start with top quality used and rehabbed equipment and wait awhile to gauge ridership numbers, etc. before splurging big $$$ on new trains.

According to a post by Frank Vollhardt on the LocoNotes Yahoo Group, six F40PHs with TANX reporting marks were recently delivered to LTEX. The numbers he listed are 372, 287, 411, 400, 319, and 243. I believe those may be the same units in this group: http://www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com/det ... ocomotives" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here we go, the Housatonic Railroad can pick these up for its promised to be profitable passenger service!

Oh right, that's just a pipedream.

They've already bought and received a bunch of the ex-GO F59s - http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewtopi ... 4#p1246405" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
