Conrail B23-7 #1989 was sent to the paint shop and repainted Blue and re-stenciled by Norfolk Southern with the Conrail logo before being sold to a broker who then sold it to Finger Lakes Railway. This explane's why she still kicks around in Conrail Blue and still has her Conrail cab number still.. As NS did not see the point to renumber 1989 sent's they had planed to get red of it anyways.

The First unit to be painted was CONRAIL GP40 # 3091 (Ex PC 3091, Exx NYC 3091) Serial #33502 built October 1967. she was painted at Collinwood Shop on May 23, 1976. Info is from Conrail Motive Power Review Vol: 1 by Gordon Lioyd Jr. and Louis A. Marre a nice shot of her is on page 23.

I found the fate of Conrail 3061. :(

I have her listed here:
http://1stclass.mylargescale.com/Scotty ... /index.htm
as Helm 3061..but then I couldn't find any reference to her after 1988..
but then I found:
http://www.thedieselshop.us/Hnotes_A.html
that says she became Union Pacific 863.
UP 863 was wrecked in 1990, long hood and cab were salvaged and reused, and the frame and remains were scrapped in 1992.

What about touch-up work for existing units? Or repainting a damaged engine? Pure conjecture here... maybe CR still had some blue paint and decided to use it to keep the fleet in good cosmetic condition until 6/1/1999.

Stumbled across this thread as I was searching for the fate of this locomotive. The cab certainly wasn't salvaged, judging by the remains that were scrapped. It looks like cab damage is what did her in, in fact.

The roster at Don Strack's UtahRails site has the following on her fate...

" UP 863's diesel engine and dynamic brake components were removed by UP at North Little Rock, shipped to VMV Enterprises at Paducah, Kentucky, and used on the former UP 598, which became UP 887; Helm Financial sold the hulk of the wrecked UP 863 for scrap to Azcon Hyman Michaels, on 10 October 1991; the frame and what was left was shipped to Azcon's salvage yard in Alton, Illinois, in late March 1992."

Number 1989 still wears Conrail's dress blue, and so does FGLK #1943.
