It may be a bit far, but in just a week, ALL the Heritage units will be together at the NC Transportation Museum for the July 4 holiday. Google the museum's address for details. It's going to be a humdinger of a celebration, they tell me, and, perhaps, the only chance to see ALL the Heritage locomotives gathered in one place. Tickets are $25, and there's a special night photo session scheduled on one of the nights. Lots of fans from all over will traveling to Spencer, NC for this event.

Fortunately Spencer is an easy day trip for me, and I have time off, so I'm planning to be there on the 3rd, when it will hopefully be less crowded than on the 4th. If the weather works out OK, of course. The current forecast for the 3rd is "A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 95. Chance of precipitation is 30%." If you're going, bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

Absolutely the winner - the DLW look is amazing. You can see why EL and ACR adopted the look, and I'm a bit surprised WC didn't adopt it when they bought ACR.

The photos are poring in on the move of the heritage units to Spencer, NC. For what will undoubtedly be one of the biggest photo sessions in railfan history. Shame is has to be 11 hours from my home or I would be making this special trip.

Poster terminal's photos below is the initial view for me of the 'B' end of the LACKAWANNA unit.

Some fellow DL&W fan correct me but I can't recall seeing ANY engine's rear-end painted with the 'wrap' bands....and the decal up near the roof ???

AIR, only the E's and F units ( passenger service ) got this so-called 'Phoebe Snow' streamlined paint scheme. Previously, the F's were painted in the m/g/y 'freight' scheme as has been recreated on the 2 TSRHS and ARHS F3 units now residing and working in Scranton....

IMO and in retrospect, NS should have painted these modern day freight diesels in the freight scheme rather than the passenger scheme. The chosen scheme looks GREAT on an E or F cab unit but looks kinda goofy on these manmouth freight diesels.

Anyway, too late now to change it.

Hey Tom,

Why don't you show them the money and your blueprints and I'm sure they might accommodate any grievances you might have!
So your not happy with how it looks???? My suggestion for you is to write NS personally, as you won't get anywhere complaining in this forum!!

Steven -

Relax....I've no illusions or inclinations of showing any money or scheme drawings ( not blueprints ) to NS and unlike you, I'm not at all inclined to believe that they would accomodate such a juvenile exercise.

As to being happy or unhappy with the rendition is irrelevent. Just opining that these new NS engines are freight only units and the Phoebe Snow streamline scheme was applied by the DL&W primarily on their E and F unit passenger fleet. Perhaps the equally attractive m/g/y freight scheme would have been more historically accurate on these modern behemoths and perhaps been a better cosmetic 'fit' what with all the sharp angles, vents and protrusions to contend with....particularly on the 'B' end.

BTW, the closest this paint job comes close to is what was applied - A plus B ends - by the DL&W on the FM units. Presumedly that is what NS used as a model.

It'll have to do.

BTW, AIR NS took the Lehigh Valley unit back to the paint shop for historically accurate modifications, correct ?

Unlike me, Tom??? What exactly are you implying???? Are you saying that I would do something like that???? Because if you are, you are sadly mistaken!!

The Lackawanna unit is absolutely perfect in all respects..
its the most "iconic", by far, of all DL&W schemes, and it was absolutely the right one to use..
and, its prototypically correct to use on a modern DL&W wide cab..
here is a prototype photo that proves it is correct:

http://railpictures.net/photo/401871/

A modern wide cab is quite similar to a cab unit nose..F units, E units etc..
much more so than a spartan cab diesel..
I always thought the scheme looked a bit odd on the Algoma Central units:

the maroon "swoop" doesn't quite fit right on a standard cab unit..
but in this case, (NS 1074) it totally works on a wide cab..
There was no other DL&W scheme that would have worked better..others would have been worse.
it was absolutely the way to go! Image
