It's hard to imagine that 70 years has passed since the worst rail disaster in the history of Philadelphia occured. A north (east) bound passenger train, the Congressional Limited, derailed while passing through Frankford Junction at high speed. An axle journal burned off causing the car to derail and the trailing coaches to derail with it. The details have been recounted many times; 79 killed, 119 injured, equipment and property destroyed, lives and service disrupted. That it happened during the war only added to the horror of it all. It took two days to return all four tracks to service.
