Hello,

We are researching the rails of the N. Y. C. & H. R. R. R. as it pertains to historic waterways. This is part of our project to daylight a historic brook in the South Bronx. Ideas suggestions welcomed.
Maps of what was done to water ways when they interfered with rail and "development" especially welcome Oral history, written accounts, pics, whatever, we will use it!

Hello

I’m interest in this area too, as well Port Morris, Oak point and Harlem River. It is difficult to find any historical documentation, photos etc. of the rail operations, marine facilities, industrial and residential sectors of the South Bronx. The New York Library Digital Collection has several copies of Bronx Real Estate Maps. The maps range in dates from 1895 to 1921. There is a zooming feature that enables one to see detail, but one can order prints from the NYCPL. They are not cheap. I tried printing them from my office plotter, but the resolution is limited. In the maps you will see that the land and waterways have changed quite a bit in the last 90 years. On each plate (map) you will see the number of the subsequent plate. Keep us posted on your interesting project.

Of some significance is the 1921 Harlem River Yard map that shows two turntables. At this stage of the game, all the trackage was NYNH&H, with NYW&B having trackage rights on such. The NYNHY&H was still operating Harlem River Branch commuter trains between Harlem River and New Rochelle.

If you click the [next] button from the 1921 map it brings you to a 1904 Harlem River Yard map which shows not only the west end of the yard, but also the 2nd/3rd Ave. el connection over which both the NYNH&H and New York Elevated trains operated.
