This accident occurred on that part of the B&O mainline on which NYC had trackage rights between Niles Jct. and Ravenna as part of the NYC's Cleveland / Youngstown route which also utilized the PRR in 2 places.

NYC Extra 2977 West with 65 cars entered the B&O from the PRR at Niles Jct. at about 11:10 PM and was proceeding westward on the siding on a slight upgrade when it failed to stop at the Stop Signal at the end of the siding and fouled #1 main track in front of B&O #9 which was proceeding on a "Clear" signal. Impact speed was 50mph as #9 struck the 10th head car of the freight and derailed. Fortunately, no fatalities but about 25 injuries; casualties were held down because of 2 E-units and 6 head-end cars before the passenger-occupied cars.

Basic rules violations of Restricted Speed, Stop Signal, calling signals, and timetable special instructions with an engineer, fireman, and head brakeman in the cab.

Wow, wonder what the "rest of the story" is on that! Crew fell asleep, maybe? I could understand if it was downhill and the engineer misjudged, and stuck his nose out foul. But working uphill and they were not just past the signal, but had the engine and 10 cars out onto the main? Image
