I merged Dutch's two posts together, for clarity, and deleted Mr Pontz's question (since Dutch as always does a good job of answering).

For clarification, a C-424 is a Century series, four axle, 2400 horse power diesel-electric locomotive. First in the series was the C-415 rated at 1500HP, the last and most powerful was the C-855, an eight axle 5500 HP brute built for (who else  ) but the UP.

Your use of "first" and "last" is correct if you're strictly going by the model numbers from lowest to highest... but if you meant "first" and "last" in terms of when the models were built, then the C415 was not first, and the C855 was not last.

The first models in the Century Series were the C420, C424, and C628, all introduced in 1963. The last model in the Century Series, introduced in 1967, was the C636.

Yes. Alco and MLW both used the same nomenclature for their Century Series locomotives. The first digit is the number of axles; the second and third digits signify the horsepower rating. So a C424 has 4 axles and 2400 horsepower; a C630 has 6 axles and 3000 horsepower; a C855 has 8 axles and 5500 horsepower; etc. One could argue that these are the most understandable and logical model designations of any of the North American locomotive builders. (EMD's model designations make far less sense and often contradict themselves.)
