The Erie RR built a powerhouse for its electrified RR in Jersey City in 1924ca. It was built on the corner of 9th and Provost. Anyone have any more information on the powerhouse or even better, a picture of it?

I've seen the picture of this power house before, I just didn't realize that it supplied power to the Erie.

The powerhouse linked to above was for the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad (PATH). It is also not at the address the initial poster listed.

Could it have been a powerhouse to supply power to the Erie's shops, stations, and yards?

As stated above the Erie was never electrified.

From the http://www.erielackhs.org archives:
Erie RR--Contract #05536--Erie Railroad Company and Bates & Roger
Construction Co.--Construction of power house facilities at 9th and Provost
Sts., Jersey City, NJ July 25, 1924
Erie RR--Contract #05713--M.H. Detrick Co.--Steam jet ash conveyors for
10 Foster Marine Type Boilers to be installed in a new power plant located
on Provost & Ninth Streets in Jersey City, NJ November 24, 1924

Not the H&M powerhouse, for sure, which is at 1st/Bay and Washington.

The power house I was talking about was Contract #05536 which states "Construction of power house facilities at 9th and Provost Streets, Jersey City, NJ.

The construction company mentioned is the company that 5 generations of my family worked for. Bates & Rogers Construction Corporation according to the above Contract built this project. I was just wondering what it was.

- Rochester to Avon was electrified railroad service.

- There were proposals in the early 1900s to electrify the Main Line for the New York Division.

Sorry for the confusion. The link I posted was for the powerhouse for the Hudson & Manhattan and not the Erie. Didn't catch the mistake right away. Not really aware of any powerhouse for the Erie in that area.

There was a power house for the Erie built circa 1924 at the 9th and Provost location. For what, I do not know, but it was a separate structure entirely from the H & M one.

Likely a central steam producing facility to provide steam for building heating, stationary engines to power machinery, pumps and so forth. May also have generated electricity for lighting.
