Hello,

I am working with a friend, who is about to begin building a virtual representation of the Erie Pine Bush branch for the Microsoft Train Simulator platform. I haven't been able to find much information online about the Erie Pine Bush Branch, nee the Middletown & Crawford Railroad.

Can anyone please tell me what industries, besides farms, existed along the branch and were served by the railroad?

I am also looking for images and maps of stations and other major railroad landmarks that existed along the branch.

Walter, this atlas from 1903 list the name of all farms and business in orange county. If you follow the branch out of Goshen, you can see what business are along the route. Be careful with the name of the Erie branch that ran from Crawford Jct. to Pine Bush. Erie and EL always called it the Crawford Branch, after the name of the original railroad, Middletown and Crawford. It was never called the Pine Bush Branch. Don't confuse it with the Pine Island Branch, which ran south from Goshen to Pine Island.

Erie had trackage rights on the O&W from Middletown to Crawford Jct to reach the Crawford Branch. After the O&W quit, the Erie bought the O&W track from Middletown to Crawford Jct and on to Fair Oaks. That remained in service until Conrail in 1976. The infamous highway crossing at grade over NY 17 was on the Crawford Branch.

The Lehigh and New England ran on the Pine Island Branch to Goshen, and then over the Montgomery Branch from Goshen to MQ Tower at Campbell Hall, and then on the New Haven to Maybrook. I found an error in the Orange County Atlas. It shows the Pine Island Branch south of Goshen as owned by the Lehigh and New England Railway, but it was actually owned by the Erie between Goshen and Pine Island. The L&NE connected with it just north of Pine Island, at Pine Island Jct. Of course, the Atlas predates the Erie Graham Line through Campbell Hall, but that is not an error.
