With the help of our members here at RAILROAD.NET, I'd like to try to compile a list of GE Universal Series locomotives operating (or operable) in the United States. This would include locomotives owned by museums and tourist/passenger railroads. The only requirement for inclusion on the list is that the locomotive has to be operable. The owner doesn't necessarily have to be operating it on a regular basis, but it should be operable without needing major repairs, and/or the owner is planning to make those repairs and put the unit back in service. "Stored serviceable" or "laid up good order" locomotives that could be put back into service with minimal effort would be a good example. Another example would be a locomotive that needs a new engine, and the owner is in the process of obtaining the new engine, but hasn't done so yet -- that locomotive could be included on the list, as long as the plan to put the locomotive back into service is firm.

If anyone knows of operable U-Boats in Canada and Mexico, those would be welcome as well.

Thanks for the great info so far! U23Bs seem, for whatever reason, to be the most indestructible of the U-Boats. The fact that they're 4-axle units of moderate horsepower probably also contributes to their continued popularity. I think of them as "the frugal railroad's GP38."

Here are some more U23Bs that I believe are likely to be in service or operable:

Great video! Thanks for the link. That U30C looks and sounds fantastic. Kudos to IRM for such a nice restoration.

Here is a video of 5383 pulling a good-sized photo freight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Os1yfZ8UJjA

And here she is again, strutting her stuff with an enthusiastic hogger at the throttle: http://youtu.be/pmfyknR0LHU

Is this the only operable U25B in North America? http://www.oerm.org/pages/sp3100.html

Since I saw Georgia Central mentioned above, Plets Express catalogs a video featuring three contemporary southeastern roads still operating GE second generation units: Georgia Central, Transkentucky Transportation and Franklin Industrial Minerals. I have the DVD and it's a favorite of mine. If you like vintage GE locomotives, I think you'd consider an investment in this program money well spent. The sound alone is phenomenal.

As far as I can tell, yes. The only other units with operating potential are NH 2525 (RMNE, has run but is currently stored), LN 1616 (SARM, used to run but is currently missing a main generator), and MILW 5056 (IRM, being restored for operation).

NYC 2500 and MILW 5057 are static display units, and CR 2610 is still rusting away in Glenmont, NY as of March 2012.

I'm around 4-stroke units in the shop every couple of days, but nothing sounds like a U-Boat. Used to miss my trains in Hoboken waiting for one to load up and move out. Great video. Thanks.

Looks like LSI's venerable U30Cs are still getting the occasional workout!
