My late father used to relate how the whole family would pack many many trunks, book space on the Bar Harbor Express NYC Penn Station to Mount Desert Ferry and spend most of the summer on the island.
The servants would drive the family Packard twin six sedan up, and it crossed the new bridge only for use in Bar Harbor itself. IIRC this was in the 1920s.
