The local news was showing pictures of the crash, and there was really nothing left of the car. IIRC, that area is a quiet zone, so I imagine the driver thought the gates were malfunctioning when he didn't hear the train but its still no reason to go around the gates. The train was going 79 mph according to Tri-Rail.
