There were elevated coal trestles on almost all 4 corners of the Woodbine Rd. overpass, with bumpers next to the sidewalks. The Philadelphia & Columbia joined the present Main Line very close to the East end of the Westbound Ardmore Station platform. That area was later used as team tracks and possibly a lumber yard..

Those tracks were extant until the installation of concrete ties and CWR about a decade ago, with one track running up against a loading dock which has been renovated as storage for the Trader Joe's. You can still see the path the tracks took near the building in the dirt on Google Maps, though the trackway next to the building has been replaced by trees. https://www.google.com/maps/@40.0061526 ... a=!3m1!1e3

Second question: That is the New York-Pittsburgh Subway. It is used very, very frequently to wye trains. Amtrak uses it every single day to spin the diesel off 42.
Just saw a Amtrak diesel using it pulling a Metroliner cab car east at the western end of the Subway.
