The long-delayed, $150 million makeover of the busy subway complex beneath City Hall will begin early next year, a top SEPTA official said Wednesday.

The century-old 15th Street station on the Market-Frankford Line and the 87-year-old City Hall station on the Broad Street line will be made roomier, brighter, and cleaner, and be equipped with 13 elevators to make them fully accessible.

And the dark, narrow passageways that connect the stations and the Subway-Surface Lines will be reconfigured to eliminate stairs and bottlenecks.

I wonder how eliminating stairs will go...

The transfer passageways from MFL platform level to BSL mezzanine level currently involves stairs, but could definitely be done with long ramps if the ceilings got worked on at the same time to preserve clearances. I'm guessing that's not the only place where there are slight elevation mismatches that have short stairways now.

This project is going to be massive.....i cant even imagine the work going into it. I remember last year at a septa meeting i asked someone about this and they was just telling me about how difficult it is because all of the structure , insurance and everything else am im just like that is alot of work period. NO BULLDOZING this one. Has there really been any artist rendering of how they want it to look on both levels ?

Until yesterday’s DNC announcement, Septa had planned to begin a $150-million renovation of the corridors under City Hall by the start of summer, 2016.
Now, spokesperson Jerri Williams says, that will be postponed a bit.
“We were going to be renovating the 15th Street station starting in the summer of 2016 and (continuing) throughout the rest of the year. We’re going to have to push that back a little bit,” she tells KYW Newsradio.
So, the project will instead begin in August, after the Democratic convention ends.
