PATCO, SEPTA work on compatibility of fare cards

PATCO riders will soon be able to use their PATCO "Freedom" cards to pay the fares on SEPTA subways and buses, PATCO and SEPTA officials said Wednesday.

However, SEPTA-issued smart cards won't work on PATCO.

After SEPTA switches to its long-awaited electronic "smart card" fare-payment system later this year, PATCO cards will be compatible with the SEPTA Key system, PATCO general manager John Rink said.

One caveat: A PATCO card must be registered with PATCO. That registration will permit SEPTA to identify the user and bill PATCO for the trip, Rink said.

1. Nobody ever promised that Key would work on PATCO. The possibility existed, and that was mentioned, but always with the caveat that it would need DRPA and Cubic to play ball. Cubic, being a blight on the American transit industry, is playing to type.

2. You may remember a very splashy announcement out of Cupertino for something called "Apple Pay". That was Apple entering the 2010s in smartphone features, and now new iPhones are Key-compatible. On behalf of Android users who made NFC a standard, you're welcome.
