My take on that is have more commuter rail if you want more Americans building it.
Make America Build Again: instead of funding assembly plants that are subsidiaries of foreign companies with Buy America Act guidelines, put bigger investments in domestic companies that could invest in such capabilities. Pullman, Budd and St. Louis once exported their cars over the world too.
AMEN!!
Agree. The one reason passenger rail is dominated by foreign players is that we are a relatively small market by comparison.

True--if consistent and predictable demand exists, American companies will be created to meet it. But they can't survive as pop-ups that disappear when an order is completed and there aren't any more in the pipeline.

CRRC's attempts at getting orders shook up the major freight car builders enough to lobby the Congress Critters to ban CRRC from getting
Federal $$$ backed car orders, other then SEPTA's order, that was done before Jan 2019,CRRC cannot bid on any projects with Fed $$$$$
CTA and MBTA are local funded projects that CRRC had the "winning" bid.

CRRC Car Order Delay

Post by rcthompson04 » Tue Jul 02, 2019 11:04 am

CRRC identified the delay because SEPTA's welding consultant is reviewing CRRC's proposed work on the car shells, will review the structural designs and give input, Busch said.

Eh. I’m fine with it. Better safe than sorry. It’s not like the Comets are on their last leg.

There hasn’t been much activity on SEPTA’s Regional Rail Service Improvement website. The last entry on the “Fleet” page mentions the farewell to the AEM-7 trip.

Is SEPTA still expecting delivery of the first multi level coach in September 2020?

Are the costs allocated for production fixed into the delivery price to SEPTA, or will the Chinese import tariffs increase the price of these cars?

Delayed a few months by mutual agreement between SEPTA and CRRC due to the welding issues mentioned above.

I’ve just been informed that the CRRC Orange Line trains in Boston have been pulled due to the doors opening in transit.

SEPTA’s been awfully quiet about their order...

There were several similar incidents on the Broad Street Line when the Kawasaki cars were brand new. Modifications were made fairly quickly to the locking systems, and they rolled on.

There really is nothing to tell. There's been a mutual agreement to delay delivery of the pilot cars by a few months over welding improvements. Aside from that, it's just been normal business...

Here's something to ponder.
https://www.inquirer.com/news/crrc-chin ... 91007.html

Fair Use: The legislation would bar federal funding for public rail car purchases from Chinese state-owned enterprises. The law, which is endorsed by the White House, would not ban CRRC from doing business in the United States, but because public transit agencies can’t afford expensive car purchases without federal help, CRRC’s U.S. operations would struggle to remain viable. SEPTA, for example, relied on $40 million in federal money to make its purchase.

The Inquirer article notes that the legislation would not impact the SEPTA CRRC cars as it is prospective not retroactive.

The article says they should be arriving next year, which is interesting. I thought it wasn't until 2021. Thank god.

The order's supposed to be completed in early '21, which may be what you were thinking of.
