With all the news of NJT rail's new fare's, the fact that the off peak round trip fare is being dropped is finally getting some notice.

With the ORT elimination, NJT Rail becomes the only service in the area NOT to offer an "off peak" rail discount.
Metro-North, LIRR and SEPTA, all continue to have a "peak", "off peak" fare table.

This also puts the fare increase for off peak round trip travel at close to 50%, the actual number being 47%.

As an example, take a couple living in NYC and looking for a weekend getaway to the shore this summer.

The fare from NYP to Bay Head will be $31.00 round trip, for a distance of only 66, or so miles.

That same couple could take the LIRR off peak, to any stop from Westhampton to Montauk for $33.50, a distance of anywhere
from 77 miles to 117 miles.

Further most "weekend warriors", buy the LIRR's "off peak 10 trip" trip with carries a further discount, making the trip $14.25 each way,
or $28.50 round trip, cheaper than the NYP to Bay Head trip.

These differences are despite a recent LIRR fare increase.

Way to go, NJT !
