New online dashboard

As part of NJ TRANSIT’s commitment to improving service and transparency, and in support of Governor Phil Murphy’s Executive Order No. 80, NJ TRANSIT has launched a new Progress by the Numbers performance dashboard at njtransit.com/performance. The dashboard contains industry-standard metrics for on-time performance, mechanical reliability and the causes for delays and cancellations.

Looks nice for sure. MTBF seems like an odd metric to report to customers (nor do I see it on the dashboard at the moment), who can probably make zero sense of it, and for what I can only imagine are not-so-flattering numbers, the cancellations are not being reported in terms of absolute numbers but rather as "35% fewer train cancellations in 2019 vs. 2018", which is equally meaningless. But it's a good start nonetheless.

I've been playing around with this and it is quite entertaining. While it doesn't actually improve the service, you at least know the why and what their take on the situation is.

New Jersey Transit last week launched a performance dashboard to display system data on on-time performance, mechanical reliability and the cause of delays and cancellations.

Dubbed Progress by the Numbers, the dashboard displays commuter-rail, light-rail and bus data from January 2017 to October 2019. Each month it will be updated with the previous month’s service.

“With the new Progress by the Numbers dashboard, our commuters, members of the media, and the general public will be able to see key performance metrics that will be updated on a monthly basis, enhancing customer experience and rebuilding a once-storied mass transit agency,” New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said in a NJ Transit press release.
