In a little less than three weeks when I'm on vacation, I plan to take a day trip up to North Jersey to try and get shots of some of the NJ Transit GP40PH-2B's I don't already have pictures of.

Of the 20 on the roster, I need pics of five:
-4200 (which seems to hang out at the MoW yard in Dover along the Morris & Essex Line)
-4204 & 4208 (I've have seen recent pictures from late 2018/early 2019 of both GP40s back in revenue service)
-4212 (last I saw, she was in the yard at the Morristown & Erie Railway. Not sure if she's off NJ Transit's roster or not)
-4218 (I believe she was in a deadline a few years back and possibly scrapped by now)

If anyone knows off hand where any one of these particular Geeps might be, great! Please do share!

Otherwise, which lines might I find these or any other GP40PH-2(B)'s in action? (I was told the NJCL is currently all ALP-45s & PL42s.)

I'm coming from South Jersey, and the Atlantic City Line (now back in service) is chock full of them. I am currently in the process of figuring out which Geeps are making the daily A.C. to Philly run.

"Fellow foamers of the North", help a brother out!!

I can actually help you a bit here.

This morning I saw GP-40 #4208 pushing a solid Comet V into the Lake Hopatcong station. Based on the schedule it appears it was assigned to train #0808 out of Hackettstown. So that one is definetely in the area.

I usually pass this train every morning on the way to work and for the past few weeks it has been assigned a PL42 or an ALP-45. So it appears it is new to this particular assignment and thus may stick around for a bit.

We get a few Geeps now and again up here depending on the day. Also occasionally see a Metro North F40 or GP-40FH on occasion. I'll keep an eye out for you and let you know if I see anything good.

There are many Geeps in North Jersey. They get around many of the diesel lines based out of Hoboken Terminal. When you come up here, maybe go to a spot along the Main & Bergen County Line. The Geeps like running on those lines and even out to Pt. Jervis. They show up on the old Lackawanna lines too.

There was one idling in the Hoboken yard a few nights ago. Don't know if it's still there.

I believe 4218 may be alive and well. I thought I had seen her running around the M&E last fall. Might be confused with 4219 though.

4218 has been out of service for a number of years. Reactivation is pending so keep your eyes peeled later this year.

4200 is not a passenger engine at this time. Last report K have of it was about two days ago, on a tie train on the NJCL. 4204 is also not a passenger engine currently.

4204 is indeed back in revenue service and has been for awhile. It was on 46/61 today.

Guys,

Thank you all very much for the information shared! I really appreciate it!

I'll be making my trek up north in about two weeks. I have a few spots in mind to check out.

If any other Geep sightings occur between now and then, please do keep me posted!

Thanks again!

FWIW, a bunch of geeps ( maybe 4 or 5) were spotted in M&E Morristown shops earlier this week.. Most were the work engines, but also spotted was 4101 which looked to be getting PTC.. Hopefully its back in action soon!

Sounds like 4300-4303 (the non-revenue GP40s). I know they are assigned to Morrisville, Long Branch and Dover as switchers. Anyone keep track on which is where (when cycled around)?

As of Sunday, May 26th, there are three equipment sets on the Atlantic City Line. Providing the power are Geeps #'s 4201, 4210 & 4215.
I'm assuming there is a protect set at the terminal in Atlantic City, but I don't know which GP40 is assigned to it.

Since my last post back in May of last year, I've managed to see and photograph two more GP40PH-2Bs that I was looking for. Both of which have shown up on the Atlantic City Line.

#4208 seen here in July, passing a holding WPCA-20 at JORDAN in Pennsauken:

And just this past Sunday (1/19), I caught #4204 through Pennsauken, headed for Philadelphia:

I'm still on the hunt for Geeps 4200, 4212 & 4218. Last I heard, 4212 was undergoing PTC installation. No recent reports on its whereabouts.

4212 has been the dedicated PTC test engine for some time now, not sure if it's back in passenger service.

4218 is still in long term (looonnnggg term) restoration.

Not particularly recent, but I had a ride with 4212 on the AC line on 1st December last year, if that's any help. At the same time both 4204 and 4208 were on the Hoboken division ('08 helped me realise my ambition to have a run over the Moodna viaduct with an NJT geep, whereas '04 remains one of the four 4200s I haven't managed a ride with - it's a Brit thing) so they obviously move around.
