The 46A has a different style of anti-climbers than the 46. The anti-climbers on ALP46As are more profound and stand out with a grey color whereas the normal 46 to has more recessed anti-climbers. There are also very minute changes to the roof equipment on the 46A. You can't really notice it.

As the ALP46s cycle through overhaul, they've been getting E-Bells and new horns.

A good way to tell the difference is by looking at the numberboard. ALP46A numberboards are in a different font. They used to not light up, whilst the ALP46 ones did. Now none light up.
Originally the ALP46As had LED marker lights, but that is another item being uniformly applied.

Now there are few "spotting differences" other than the numbering and the propulsion package.

The 46's are also getting new speed-stripes. It's good that the 46's are getting overhauled instead of sidelined like the ALP44. I can see them lasting another 15-20 years after this.
