There was a discussion in the Railfanning SIRT operations thread about the SIRT using B&O-style sgnals. While some of the old original ones are still active, I thought I would post pictures of what has been replacing these over time. They appear to keep the B&O signal format but are designed with a one-size-fits-all approach, the same signal head with minor modifications is used on gantries, poles and as dwarfs. I have never seen more than one on a pole, it appears at times when you would use two heads on a pole instaed they place them on seperate poles.

These pictures were all taken from legal locations.

Here's one facing the opposite direction from normal train travel on a track at Huguenot. Behind it is another facing direction of normal train travel, you might be able to spot three more by the bridge. I think the cages are to prevent vandalism.

One on the other track opposite the last one. Details can be seen better without the bridge shadow from above, 8 lights in a circle with the top and bottom lunar white as part of the signal case, I do not remember what 4 of the signal lights in the circle are, I know the left and right are red, top and bottom green.

Here is a dwarf signal from St. George, lacking the lunar whites the bottom spot covered by a circular plate, also lacking 4 of the 8 other lights.

A gantry type mounted on a road bridge at Tomkinsville station, hard to see but similar to the Huguenot one.

A dwarf at Tomkinsville with 6 lights.

The backside of the Tomkinsville dwarf, i do not know what is on it.

Another under the Tomkinsville station, I know it is hard to see but it has 6 lights like the dwarf and only the top lunar.

At Tomkinsville is the best attempt to compare the new ones with the old as seen here, the dwarf and pole signal are on the left, on the right between light poles you can see an old B&O cpl. Rough estimate, the new ones are about half as wide across the disk.

And here are a couple of other old signals still working behind Tomkinsville station, there is another not shown just before entering the tunnel into St. George.

SIRT kept their aspects and indications from before the signal modernization, but they did add one.

The old B&O "Permissive" (Lunar, LQ45 + Top or Bottom Marker ) became "Cab Signal Proceed" a.k.a. "Proceed into occupied block governed by Cab Signal Indications, non-equipped or failed trains to stop and stay and call for instructions"
