FYI, The train operator told me that the PA-1's-3's are supposed to go to South America because Argentina has perchased these cars. Did you see the PA-1's on the same flat beds that the PA-5's were delivered on? they were transported to the Port Newark to be shipped to Argentina.

Yes PA-1's thru 3 were sold to Kawaski as part of the contract to purchase PA-5's. Yes they will be sold to a city in South America { I can't remember who}.

No PA-4's are not being re-numbered, A large number PA-4's sometime in the future will be converted to dedicated work train only fleet. No firm tmetable is set.

after the alluninum foils (PA-1's thru PA-3's) was sold to Kawasaki, South America will be the place to send them but, will it be argentina?

First time I've heard it, then again it might be hush hush in the car equipment division

Just heard from a very reliable source, that they were sold to Kawasaki, but he was stated that they were to be scrapped somewhere in Ohio. They are currently being shipped out on truck, the same way the PA-5's are coming in, and then scrapped out there. Kawasaki was going to refurb them for a startup railroad in South America, but the cost proved to be inefficient, so they're getting recycled.

Everyone: What will PATH do with the remainder of the late 80s 800 series PA-4 Kawasaki fleet?
As these date from the mid to late 80s they definitely have some life left...
If PATH does not keep these cars after the work cars are converted it makes sense to sell them to another transit operator no matter where they may be...

I fully understand the PA1-2-3 cars being turned down for rebuilding remembering their age...45 or so years for the PA1-2 cars (mid 60s era) and 37-38 years for the PA-3 cars(1972-73) and as mentioned rebuilding them for more service in South America was not economical and most will probably be scrapped...hopefully at least a small number will head for preservation someplace like the 9/11 involved cars are going to be...

Also, just to put things in perspective, some of these cars getting scrapped definitely have half a BILLION - yes, 500,000,000 - miles on them.

Who would take them? The only other operator in the USA that runs similar cars (to PA-3 specifically) would be Boston MBTA's Blue Line; their cars are three inches shorter, though.

The PA1/PA1/PA3s were rebuilt in the 1980s by MK when the PA4s were arriving. Expect some PA1/2/3/4 cars to be work motor conversions or so.

Older PA1/PA2 cars are being shipped out by truck to Ohio for scrap.

It would make more sense to sell the newer PA4s to another transit agency and either convert the older PA1/2/3 cars into work service or send them off to the scrapper. The PA4s should still have 10-15 years of service left in them.

I can't see another transit agency in the US or Canada wanting them. MBTA definitely won't take them for its Blue Line because the PA4s are not capable of operating off of catenary wires, which are a requirement for that line. Also, the Blue Line is already running with 94 new cars from Siemens, so I don't think they are in desperate need of second-hand cars that would have to be rebuilt to run off of two different types of electric power.

Some cars are expected to be turned into work/MoW cars. I don't know about flats.
