SIRT Alco #407 To Cross The Outerbridge Tonight

Post by railroadcarmover »

SIRT Alco #407 will be moving out of the MTA shop tonight ( friday night 04/30 ) on a special truck. The departure time is supposed to be 12:00am and it will cross into NJ over the Outer Bridge. It will then proceed up route 287. A separate truck will be transporting the loco trucks as well as the air tanks.

If you happen to see this "American Locomotive Company" piece of splendid machinery while driving on route 287, its not a mirage. Its a "dream come true". She will live on....................... :-D

407 is now at the riggers yard in SI. Move to Phoenicia was delayed by an unexpected clearance issue. Engine will roll once new route is determined and permits issued. EH, CMRR

FYI, it's not the "Outer Bridge." Its the Outerbridge Crossing and was named after, Eugenius Outerbridge, the first chairman of the Port Authority. Yes, his last name was "Outerbridge."

Know that Alco well. lived right next to SIRT while growing up. Used to hear the pitch of the that engine and ran to the front door to get a glimpse.
I remember the Whitcomb too - was super loud. I got to get up there to visit them someday. Tx for the pix and info.

The Kingston Trolley Museum and the Catskill Mountain Railroad are physically, philosophically, and completely different operations.

The move has been delayed while a new route is permitted to accommodate clearance issues on the Thruway.

The permits are in order and the locomotive is waiting near the Bayonne Bridge to cross over into NJ. As of now , this should occur between 3 or 4am tonight ( wed morning ). I just spoke to Staten Island Towing for this confirmation. They are the outfit that is transporting the locomotive.

Staten Island Towing has the equipment to handle rigging, lifting and moving equipment of this nature and they can also do mobile derailment cleanup. They are a great outfit and do top quality work. I have been using them for several years with transporting my Trackmobiles to and from rental sites. They also moved my spare OP 38D8 Fairbanks Morse diesel engine out of US Steel 2 years ago.
I recommend them highly.

Engine arrived safely at Mt. Tremper on Thursday, re-assembly should have happened today. Welcome CMRR's newest locomotive! :-)

Sorry for the confusion. I just meant that there is a lot of ex SIRT equipment in the Kingston area. I married a Staten Isl girl and since then I have become interseted in SIRT history and equipment. I was on the last NY ERA sponsored run of those Alco's in oct 2009. That engine sounded good and ran beautiful. You guys at CMRR got a good one.

My daughter works/lives up in the Phoenicia area so it would be a great excuse to check this RR out.
