If the city had the money to build a light rail line down 34th or 42nd street, where would you put the maintance facility? And if they build on both streets do you have 2 or join them to one? That would not be financially practical when you have buses that can be driven from exisiting garages.

If there ever were lines on both 34th and 42nd Streets, there would be track connections between the two. Probably one would be on the West Side (11th or 12th Avenues) and the other on the far East Side around the Con Ed development site. These tracks could be used for revenue service too, perhaps.

I'm sure there would only be one repair depot, probably somewhere on the far West Side.

Keep in mind this is just speculation I've heard, not actual information from the MTA.
