New Jersey Wants to End Dumping of Redbirds Off Shore

Unfortunately, I cannot find an electronic version of this story. In Friday's "Metro" newspaper, there was a brief article stating that New Jersey would no longer be accepting old Redbirds to be dumped off the shore. Apparently, the artifical reef was supposed to last 30 years, but the cars have been rapidly deteriorating.

Arn't the redbirds made of stainless steel? Shouldn't that not break down for a long time?

If they were made of stainless steel there wouldn't have been any reason to paint them red (or the other colors they wore before the red came along.)

the red birds were normal steel

one reason for the stainless cars degrading so fast was they were partly made with carbon steel and the salt water caused electrolosis.

The cars in questions are R38, R40s and R42s placed off the shore since April 2008. The Redbirds are doing very well.

I was under the impression that only Redbirds were being used for the artificial reefs.
