I'm guessing you guys know this, but what do the "7 to 3" signs in the tunnels mean?

I'm guessing you guys know this, but what do the "7 to 3" signs in the tunnels mean?

They show the engineer when the rear of the train is clear of the switch points. There are also ones marked "8" for 8-car trains.
