I am all for eliminating the EWR stop, with a better connection all under one roof at NWK. This also makes it mentally easier for the passengers. I am not a fan of the current project because it is still not a "one-seat" ride from WTC or Jersey City to the airport. It is hard to justify extending PATH for this purpose. What you mentioned makes more sense. Bring the train right to the airport along with NJT's & Amtrak's passengers to better justify the use of a heavy rail connection.

Because who doesn't want to see, hear, and smell, the local homeless population of downtown Newark NJ? ?

I was going toward a famous saying. However, instead of going there, mentally speaking, passengers always do a double take that there is a separate stop for the airport. The crew on NJT repeats the announcements eight times each trip. The stop slows traffic on the Corridor. It was not wise to build a whole new station on the ROW for a monorail which is now defunct. But since it exists, why not build PATH to a no-man's land terminus serving only a few airport passengers?

Well, despite some glaring flaws, it appears like this will get built. Funding just approved unanimously by PA board.

The plan retains $1.7 billion to extend the PATH to Newark Airport and about $1.5 billion to build a rail link between LaGuardia Airport and the No. 7 subway line. Funding for various New York airport improvements supported by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is in the plan.
Like many projects that get built, there are often more pressing issues, but at least this is something that should get built, albeit not necessarily before gateway.

Also, interestingly, no notes in any of these articles about reconstructing the Airtrain at Newark. Is that funding already committed? The EWR airtrain can't handle the capacity now, throw in rapid transit, and it could be a catastrophe.

Its not just a question of capacity, the AirTrain is at the end of its design life....

An added stop on Haynes Ave with a transit village proposed back in the spring is closer to reality it appears. Personally instead of wasting money on a PATH extension a brand new momorail system between NPS and EWR w/stops in between should be put in place.

Anyone have a link to what's the current plan? just extend the path from Newark Penn to the NEC EWR stop? Or is it going to stop by the terminals or in a crazy world replace the monorail too?

Was just at Newark yesterday (and on an Airtrain that got stuck for 10 min) and it brought me back to this thread. The attached powerpoint actually only says "Design and Construct 42 AirTrain footings", not necessarily NEW AirTrain. It is absurd how little has been shared (considering the PortAuthority is funded by your tolls and taxes) about the Newark Airport Airtrain replacement, considering all accounts are saying the current system has already passed its design life, is already over-capacity, has shutdown multiple-times for repairs, and was orginally designed for theme-parks in tropical climates.

Have there been any press releases or designs released? I've read press releases about 2 billion dollars committed and a late 2020 construction start but absolutely nothing about design or implementation.

Minor clarification -- the PA isn't funded by taxes, but rather by bonds backed by toll revenue (for the most part anyway)....

Looking at the presentation that was shared at the end of 2017, their timeline showed an FTA determination of FONSI or EIS requirement in 2019. Did that happen?

I have to wonder, really, how many of the benefits of this project could be achieved by simply doing the ground-level work in connecting the existing station to the community, without any ROW extension, and adjusting AMTK and NJT schedules for slightly better headways (on weekends especially, there are some goofy intervals — no service for 50 minutes followed by 4 trains in an 11-minute period). Given that the new Harrison station which required demolition and two fancy new head houses took $250 million, this work — literally just building a vestibule and some escalators/elevators — could probably be done in less than 10% of the original $1.7 billion project cost?

The reason for the funky weekend schedules is to accommodate work in the North River Tunnels: all the inbound trains must be within one 20 minute interval, then a 10 minute gap, then the outbound trains in a 20 minute interval, gap, etc... when only one tunnel is in service. So you can't get better headways without running, say, an EWR-NWP or EWR-HOB shuttle which does not use the North River Tunnels.
