What is the Propulsion System that M1, M1A, M2, M3, M3A, M4, and M6 uses?

They use electricity to power the traction motors.

Yes, indeed. They need 1.21 gigawatts of electricity going through there flux capacitor...I mean traction motors..

When the ASC cuts in at 88 MPH you're gonna see some serious shit!

Thats why they are only allowed a top speed of 80..we dont want any of them to reach 88 MPH with those pesky flux capacitors...
This is what happened last time a train hit 88 with the speed controll cut out... ended up in a medival castle!! The RR hates when those things happen.... and you thought all that arcing was the 3rd rail...
Doc... IT WORKED!!!!! Marty.. Youre Dam right it worked Doc!

I think it is actually 79 MPH. The book just rounds up. I am only a railfan, so this is only heresay!

Since LIRR does not operate half of the equipment originally asked about, I'm moving this to the Metro-North forum for additional exposure. The question was about propulsion, not top speeds.

That is incorrect, the M2/4/6's run at 90mph using AC catenary. DC Third rail operations are limited to 80mph to prevent arcing and melting of the third rail shoes.

Patrick

The restriction on thirdrail to 80 is(whas, its now 75) a trackspeed restriction and has nothing to do with arching or melting of third rail, all M series cars are rated 100 mph max in both AC or DC mode

The M1's and M3's ran at 108-112 mph between Woodside and Jay on #2 Main line, east and west, (1) pair at a time.

Propulsion on M3 differs from the M1 as traction motor cooling was added, along with a substantial weight increase. That caused a difference in acceleration and braking which is why Metro-North did not pair the M1s and M3s, with very few exceptions. M2,4 & 6 are compatible and routinely run together.

m1 used GE1255's= 600 hp
m2 used GE1259= 648 hp
m3 uses GE 1251=560 hp
m4 uses GE1259 = 648 hp
ACMU's used GE 1240's = 400 hp

no info on m6

on M1 and M3 the propulsion is Cam controlled DC resistor control.
on M2/4 and 6 same system is used for DC control but the AC is controlled in AC mode (Thiristors I believe)

the m7 has ac propulsion.
